Course Description:

Basic Tailoring is a prerequisite for the Fashion Study Program.

This 8-week, 40-clock-hour, avocational course meets weekly for 1 hour of lecture and 4 hours of hands-on lab work. Students will develop and demonstrate fundamental sewing and tailoring techniques needed for success in subsequent courses. These include various methods of hemming, waistband construction, zipper application, dart techniques, body measurements, and other essential skills.

8-Week Course Outline

Week One

  • Review basic sewing and serger threading and operation

  • Create four basic shape sewing practice samples

  • Cut and serge sample fabric for future projects

  • Create a tailor’s tack practice sample

  • Create samples for straight stitch and double stitch

  • Demonstrate gathering techniques and create a gathering sample

  • Demonstrate sewing darts and create a dart sample

Week Two

  • Review techniques for sewing a visible zipper

  • Practice sewing a visible zipper multiple times

  • Create a visible zipper sample

Week Three

  • Review techniques for sewing an invisible zipper

  • Practice sewing an invisible zipper multiple times

  • Create an invisible zipper sample

Week Four

  • Review techniques for sewing a kick pleat

  • Demonstrate sewing a kick pleat

  • Create a kick pleat sample

  • Apply techniques to the course skirt project

  • Review four different hemming methods

  • Create samples of the four hemming methods

  • Apply hemming techniques to the course skirt project

Week Five

  • Review steps for waistband construction

  • Create a five-step sample guide for waistband construction

  • Create a completed waistband sample

Week Six

  • Review and demonstrate techniques for making a French seam

  • Create a French seam sample

  • Review and demonstrate techniques for adding piping to a design

  • Create a piping sample

Week Seven

  • Review methods for sewing a princess dart

  • Demonstrate sewing a princess dart on a sample

  • Review techniques for sewing facing to a neckline

  • Demonstrate sewing facing on the princess dart sample

Week Eight

  • Review methods for measuring different body types

  • Partner up and practice taking measurements

  • Review sewing buttonholes on two different machines

  • Create a buttonhole sample
